keeping the old car

on the way home from work today i saw a girl stuck at a red light. after she told me she didn't need a jump, i was sure there was nothing i could do for her. but between her crying fits she was cussing at everything on wheels that went by her, so i pulled over, figurring i could at least help keep her calm. i am a psyc grad right? one car she yelled at hit the brakes, got out and looked ready to throw down. im pretty sure this white girl standing outside her car got her out of that one. your welcome.

anyway, what i realized during this little half hour adventure was that the only people who stopped to help, or at least rolled down there window to ask about it, were people also in old cars.

people who drive old cars are nice.
i drive an old car.
so i am nice.
if i get a newer car, i will be less nice.

lesson learned.

It takes a whole village to raise a child.
How is our child doing?

Asian journalist, did you feed her today?
African businessman, did you read to him?
American actress, did you brush his teeth?
Australian teacher, did you tuck him into bed?

Did you show her how to find her voice?
Is he learning how to walk like a man?

Who am I?
Am I rich Uncle Sam?

has lots of money.
never visits.
never calls.
has a house.
a car.
eats donuts and jelly beans.
sunglasses that could buy a month of food.

Is that me?
please no

How is our child doing?

Does he have clean water?
Are both her parents alive?
Will she face a preventable disease?
Has he been told about his maker?

may i never think so highly of myself
may i never fall into indifference
may i remember the powerless
may i stand against injustice
may i pray to the Lord of the harvest

to send His workers
send His church
send me

winter reveals what was hidden by spring

Sunday, January 09, 2011

This morning, after weeks of countless yet beautifully logical excuses for my lack of exercise, I decided to run. I knew better than to expect too much out of my vacationing legs, but my goodness I was a sad sight for the neighbors. As I finished my shamefully long one and a half mile loop, I noticed how clearly I could see into the woods near my house. The edge is usually a screen of layered vines and leaves, but today from the road I had a clear view into the trees.

Winter reveals what was hidden by spring.

Icy roads cancelled church today, so I layered up and set out to take a picture of the woods. I’m embarrassed at how sore my legs are today after my little running adventure yesterday. After having fun maneuvering three jackets an umbrella and my camera these are what I came away with.

The top one is the view from the road and below is one from inside the woods.
I love God's trees.
